Changing Word format
Posted at: 2010-04-01 20:08:49
I found from a number of my clients that they have received emails with Word documents they can’t open. They have the older version of Word (2000, XP/2002, 2003) and they can’t open the new 2007 format.

If you are using Word 2007, then watch my YouTube video and I’ll show you how to set Word to use the more friendly format:

Once you have mastered Word, you can do the same with Excel and PowerPoint.

A page on my website

QUOTE (jennWright @ 2010-03-11 05:17:45)
Hi everyone,

Please can anyone tell me how my clients can be directed to the relevant page for them on my site from google so bypassing the stuff that isn’t yet relevant to them?

Thanks, Jenn

Firstly, have a descriptive title tag set on the page, for instance if your site was bloggs.com you’d have a title on the widgets page that would say ”Bloggs.com – Widgets for sale” so when the link appears in google, it gives you a more informative title.

Secondly, using the meta tag: description tells google what to display underneath the title, so each page has a unique description that tells google not only what to search for but also displays to your client all about your site.

Meta: keywords is where you set up short keywords that may help Google and other search engines find the keywords in which to search on.

Google have a more descriptive page here:

Free telephone numbers
Posted at: 2010-02-19 02:51:26
If you go to sipgate.co.uk you can register a free VoIP telephone number in your chosen area (even 0845/0870). sipgate uses a standard called SIP for their calls, which means any SIP soft phone can connect.

It doesn’t work directly with Skype, so you need to use a different program, off the top of my head there is: Fring, gizmo5, x-lite, truphone, sjphone. Some work on Macs as well as the iphone, android and symbian phones.

Like Skype, SIP to SIP calls are free. SIP is a standard and you can find providers that offer extra business services, such as IVR/ISR (Press 1 for…/ Say “sales”); call queuing and conference facilities (and so much more) just by using your SIP details.

Macs

I would personally shop around to see if you can get a better deal than £300, as most of that would be profit.

If you have access to the installation CD/DVD you can reinstall a Mac for a different user and it will wipe all the previous settings.

PDQ question
Posted at: 2010-02-11 13:11:10
My business deals primarily with the general public, so I’ve wondered on the possibility of using a mobile PDQ machine to process credit cards on the move.

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to do this? I don’t have a merchant account yet as I’ve been processing online payments using paypal.

Currently, payments are taken in cash or cheque, but I’d like to switch to monthly charging and recurring payments.

As you are probably aware, clearing cheques is a risky business especially if the cheque is cancelled or the owner lacks the funds in the account.

I hate your website…

Hello,

I’m John Crowhurst, owner of John’s Computer Support. I’ve been trading for 4 years next month and need to radically change my business. The business workshop has been an eye opener and I’ve already made some progress in sharpening my niche.

I specialise in home and home based businesses. The bulk of my business is to provide computer repair and necessary support services to the domestic market.

When a disaster strikes, most if not all my clients lack backups or some sense of backup routine. In the financial world, lost data is money but to my clients, losing their family photos, emails or that book they’ve been writing, they lose personal memories.

Whenever I take a client’s machine for repair, I perform a routine backup of their files and restore them after the repair so the customer carries on from where they left off. I often do this and return the computer to them within 3 days.

From the workshop, I learnt about being a niche and from there the fact that I can make it personal.

Thanks for listening, I wish everyone the very best!

Yours,

John
